CFDRC has filed a patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office entitled “Thrombectomy Microcatheter.” Thrombectomy catheters are used to remove blood clots in arteries, such as those that cause stroke. CFDRC’s thrombectomy microcatheter design uses ultrasonic acoustic streaming from a computationally designed catheter tip to disrupt blood clots, even in arteries that are too small for existing thrombectomy catheters. Drs. Guiren Wang, Shankar Sundaram, and Kapil Pant and Peter Storm invented the microcatheter while working on a contract awarded by the National Institutes of Health to develop improved treatments for stroke.
