Spacer Patent Application Filed with U. S. Patent Office A patent application titled “Pediatric Spacer to Reduce Drug Impaction Loss” has been filed with the U.S. Patent Office (10/775,465). This new spacer, intended for use with Metered Dose Inhalers in pediatrics, greatly reduces drug loss within the spacer and/or throat as is prevalent with many commercial spacers available today. This advancement was based on a novel synergistic approach employing sophisticated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis along with traditional in-vitro experiments.
The new spacer was invented by a CFDRC Biomedical Technology Branch team comprising of Shankar Sundaram, B. Prabhakar Pandian, Vinod Makhijani & Andrzej Przekwas . The Assignee is CFD Research Corporation. This invention was conceived during the execution of a National Institute of Health (NIH) research contract, administered through the National Heart Lung & Blood Institute (NHLBI).
