NASA Tech Briefs magazine features CFDRC technology for simulation of rocket exhaust interaction with Lunar Soil
The December 2012 issue of NASA Tech Briefs Journal, features an article on CFDRC technology for simulations of rocket exhaust interaction with Lunar Soil. The article is located on pages 40-41. An extracted version of the article is shown here.
Under a recently awarded SBIR Phase III contract to CFDRC by the NASA Office of Chief Technologist, this featured technology is being adopted for simulation of the debris field resulting from landing robotic landers supporting Lunar missions such as the Innovative Lunar Demonstrations Data (ILDD) program and Google Lunar X-Prize (GLXP) which may land close to Apollo historical sites. This project’s scope is to perform high fidelity simulations of such landing scenarios and characterize the resulting plume driven debris environment such that spacecraft designers can adhere to NASA guidelines to protect lunar historic sites.
