CFD Research Corporation will be exhibiting at the 19th Annual Space and Missile Defense Symposium August 16th-18th in Huntsville, AL. The SMD Symposium is the leading educational, professional development and networking event in the space and missile defense community. The symposium is widely attended by leaders and professionals from the United States and our allies around the world. Some of the highlights of CFDRC’s capabilities being showcased at the exhibit are discussed below. If you are attending the event make sure to stop by booth 1315 to meet and discuss your interests with CFDRC staff.
CFD Research Corporation has recently demonstrated novel chemistries for thermal batteries that provide up to 30% reductions in weight and 20% reductions in volume compared to conventional thermal batteries. Thermal batteries are used as the primary source for guidance, control, and other electronic functions in many missile defense weapon systems. Conventional configurations, based on 50-year-old technology, are not capable of meeting the requirements of new weapon applications that demand high power and energy density, at lower weights, for long-duration flight profiles.
High voltage cathode and stable electrolyte compositions, using innovative materials, have been demonstrated by CFDRC in both internal testing and testing performed in collaboration with our battery supplier partner. Initial testing has demonstrated improvements in performance when compared to conventional batteries, while achieving reductions in size and weight using the CFDRC composition. Additional design optimization is expected to result in further increases in performance that provide new solutions for weapon system applications.
CFDRC has demonstrated the viability of new propulsion technologies that provide increased flexibility and maneuverability for missile systems. Our Throttleable Propulsion technology uses a pressure-balanced actuation system to alter the thrust of solid rocket motors that, typically, generate constant or limited thrust profiles. This novel approach uses only 30% of the power required for conventional systems by controlling the position of the nozzle instead of the pintle. This technology expands the engagement envelopes for missiles and provides increased range through customized management of propulsive energy available.
CFDRC is developing technologies to understand the effects of weather and other environmental factors on weapon system performance. Our researchers are combining meteorology, weather forecasting, and materials performance technologies to develop tools that predict weather in operational theaters and the impact of weather on missiles and sensors.
