Huntsville, Ala. | October 27, 2016 – CFD Research Corporation has been awarded a $1M contract from the Army to develop pulsed voltammetry analysis tools for assessing battery electrode materials and fuel cell catalysts. Pulse voltammetry techniques, coupled with model-based analysis tools, provide a number of advantages for quantitative analysis of electrochemically active materials that govern the performance of batteries and fuel cells.
In prior work, CFDRC demonstrated the ability to provide computational models and software that utilizes voltammogram data from laboratory instruments; predicts the response of electrochemical mechanisms from entire square wave voltammograms; and determines reaction kinetic parameters with uncertainty quantification.
During this new effort, CFDRC will further develop the analysis package to improve usability and robustness, and to address a broader range of pulse voltammetry and related techniques. The models will be extended to address porous electrodes, then continually improved and validated during application to battery electrode materials and fuel cell catalysts. Interfaces will be added to simplify use, and to enable linking the analysis with data from a variety of instruments.
“The end result will be a validated software product for pulse voltammetry analysis that provides the quantitative information necessary to assess materials solutions to Army power generation and energy storage challenges,” said Vernon Cole, principal investigator, “This capability can help accelerate the transition of promising materials from the laboratory to prototype systems.”
