(Huntsville, Ala. | October 3, 2023) – CFD Research has been awarded a $25M contract from the U.S. Air Force (USAF) Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), Human Effectiveness Directorate to develop and validate a broad in silico framework for toxicity risk assessment of USAF relevant hazardous materials and contaminants. This effort introduces novel technology and streamlined frameworks for building integrated computational environments for toxicity predictions.
“The main goal of this effort is to develop a software tool to address USAF-specific toxicological concerns for rapid risk assessment and decision-making by warfighters while in the field. For this purpose, we are building a database and identifying models and workflows to be integrated into a mobile app-based tool,” said Dr. Narender Singh, CFD Research project lead.
Using advanced in silico tools coupled with novel in vitro test systems, CFD Research’s goal is to develop rapid risk assessment workflows for likely Air Force exposure scenarios. The key components of the workflow are: (a) catalog and curate available models and chemical datasets, (b) develop new models and workflows and/or improve the existing models, (c) generate new data to support and validate models and workflows, (d) develop risk assessment guidelines, and ultimately integrate the outcomes in field-applicable and easy to use software application.
“Predictive risk capability tools have been used for multiple end goals, including screening and priority-rank listing of hazardous chemicals for detailed evaluation, supporting rapid hazardous chemicals identification and risk assessment, and classification/labeling of chemicals, as well as, to make rapid and better decisions for both known and unknown chemicals,” said Dr. Kapil Pant, CFD Research Executive Vice President.
