Huntsville, Ala. – CFD Research, a leader in advanced engineering solutions, has been awarded a $1.25M contract from the US Air Force to develop innovative fuel flow measurement systems. These systems will be essential for supporting ground testing of advanced vehicles, providing precise and reliable measurements of hydrocarbon fuels at extreme temperatures and pressures.
CFD Research’s approach involves integrating state-of-the-art Coriolis flow meters with advanced analytical and experimental techniques. By partnering with Emerson, a global leader in automation technology, CFD Research will leverage commercial-grade Coriolis meters and develop specialized calibration protocols to ensure accurate and reliable measurements.
The project will deliver prototype fuel flow measurement systems with the following key features:
- High-Temperature Capability: Operational beyond the highest commercially-available temperature.
- Precision and Accuracy: Precise calibration and uncertainty assessment.
- Robustness: Designed to withstand harsh conditions.
- Versatility: Capable of measuring multiphase fuels.
The developed systems will be directly applicable to the Air Force Test Center (AFTC), and the Air Force Research Laboratory, Aerospace Systems directorate (AFRL/RQ) Endothermic Fuels Test Branches, supporting their critical research and development efforts.
“CFD Research’s expertise in testing, coupled with its partnership with Emerson, will ensure the successful development of these advanced fuel flow measurement systems.” said Adam Elliott, Senior Director of Test & Evaluation at CFD Research.
