Huntsville, Ala. | September 12, 2017 – CFD Research Corporation, in partnership with the University of Washington and the University of South Carolina, has been awarded a $750k contract from the OSD/Air Force to further develop integrated nanophotonics design automation tools utilizing compact models and model order reduction techniques.
Silicon photonics is an emerging field with rapidly growing interest from both the military and commercial sectors with diverse applications including communication, sensors, and data processing. The goal of the project is to develop and demonstrate a nanophotonic design automation tool (NanoPDA) based on compact modeling methodology and reduced order model (ROM) techniques for system-level analysis of complex photonic integrated circuits (PICs).
In earlier work, key technology elements were developed and proof-of-principle was successfully demonstrated. A NanoPDA tool encapsulating the interface to device simulation, compact modeling for hierarchical photonic integrated circuits (PICs), and ROMs of photonic components was developed. By way of extensive USAF relevant case studies, critical evidence was established that compact modeling and ROMs in system-level representation are able to accurately model, analyze, and predict complex PICs performance.
In this follow-on work, the software will be optimized in performance and functionality. Advanced ROM techniques and parametric modeling algorithms will be developed to expand the photonic model library and improve design capabilities. The ROM assembly and implementation and software framework will be refined to enable system-level parameterization of PICs. Optimal designs will be fabricated, and experimentally characterized to validate and demonstrate the software. Key stakeholders such as AIM Photonics will be engaged to facilitate technology commercialization.
“Future goals are for the software to be integrated with existing EDA tools to automate the entire design flow for technology transition,” said Dr. Kapil Pant, Vice President CFDRC.
