Huntsville, Ala. | November 30, 2016 – CFD Research Corporation has been awarded a $1M contract from the Army to further develop an advanced burn injury assessment tool which aids first responders and physicians in evaluating the severity of the burn injury to better direct treatment protocols.
“Burn patient outcomes depend on accurately assessing wound surface area as a percent of the total body surface area (%TBSA), burn locations/depth and age. %TBSA is essential in determining fluid resuscitation and planning for surgical intervention and rehabilitation,” notes Dr. Kay Sun, CFDRC principal scientist and principal investigator. “The goal of this project is to develop a burn injury assessment tool with morphable 3D anthropometric human body models to improve the accuracy of assessing TBSA and burn areas, and therefore treatment recommendations.”
Prior work produced a functional prototype that can create anthropometrically morphable body models in real-time for interactive demarcation of burn areas based on burn severity (with photographic assistance) and compute %TBSA.
In this follow-on work, in collaboration with Prof. David Herndon, from UTMB, a renowned burn trauma surgeon and Prof. Matthew Reed from UMTRI, the capabilities of the prototype will be expanded to develop a more comprehensive tool. New functionalities will include a database to retrieve stored patient and burn information, addition of child models, full body model articulations for independent body part scaling, and a specialized interface for the hands given their high burn incidences. To further aid in image-assisted burn demarcation, a photograph acquisition guide for direct alignment with the 3D model on the mobile version of the tool will be developed along with infrared thermal image processing to estimate burn depth. Validation will also be performed on burn patients.
“This project brings CFDRC further into the domain of personalized injury and builds upon the excellent anthropometry work that has been developed at CFDRC,” said Dr. Andrzej Przekwas, CFDRC senior vice president and CTO. “The team and the plan that Kay has put together will broaden the scope of the tool and bring it into practical use at hospitals, thus making a positive impact for burn patients.”
